Yeah, everything's good. It wasn't for a few days, but I think we understand each other now. I guess not everything this place does is strictly bad. Just most things.
[Kyle doesn't respond to that, figuring that it's not likely to make Alex agree with him anymore than he does. Even if Kyle is now kind of confused about leaving here, about what he's gained and knowing that he only has it for so many years. He's seen what a millennium is to one person, and he hasn't a tenth of that to offer but he wants to be able to offer all he can.
Grabbing food at a nearby cart that he's eaten at before, including drinks and he finds a picnic table near the entrance. Settling in, he sends a text to Elijah, making sure things are settled about the permits and waits for Alex. ]
Alex couldn't but smile a little. His post hadn't been up that long, so it wasn't hard to wonder at why Kyle had called this impromptu meeting. He'd already been planning on calling Kyle in, so at least this way he'd have a chance to see what Kyle's reaction to all of this was first. He packed the animals into their crate, although they were quickly reaching the point where they were well-trained enough that he wouldn't have to bother, and headed to the park.
He lifted a hand when he saw Kyle parked at a picnic table and made his way over.
"Hey," he said, sitting down. "What's so important you couldn't text?"
Seeing Alex, despite his concerns about the post and for Liz's sake, he can't help but smile. He knows how much Alex wants to go home, but he also knows he is glad to have him here with him, that he hadn't shown up here alone. Just as Liz hadn't, but that doesn't make it any better in his mind.
"Wow, not even playing with niceties, are you?" Laughing as he pulls up the posts on his device though, pushing it towards Alex.
"Well, given my first thought was that this is either you or Tim, I figured that was something I didn't want to say on the network." He arches a brow. "Am I entirely wrong?"
Alex didn't do more than take the phone and give a cursory look at the screen. Of course he knew what was there. It wasn't like there were a whole lot of controversial texts lately, especially ones that Kyle might want to question him about. He handed the phone back.
"Someone had to do something," he said with a shrug. "I've been doing as much as I can behind the keyboard, but there's only so much that can happen before I have to get out and actually do something."
His smile twisted a little.
"Bass will probably kill me, but." Except Bass already knew because he wasn't going to make that mistake twice. Bass wasn't going to be able to stop him, but Alex wasn't letting him be blindsided a second time.
He takes the phone, sliding it into his pocket. The entire time he's just considering Alex, not even sure what to say. He had been nearly certain, though he hadn't thought about what he might say.
"Wait, wait. Bass doesn't know? Jesus Fuck, Alex. What's the point of fighting for others if you get him busted? You think they'll keep up with his medication then?" Because after the time they had been trapped together, it's a thought he can't help but have when thinks start going wonky here.
"So what are you going to do? Kind of hard to fight city hall when they have the ability to turn you into a monkey or send you to an alternative world," he points out. And while he hadn't been a monkey, thank God, he had been turned into an animal and lived in that world being hunted.
"Hell, we're the most vulnerable parties in this place, Manes. Just what do you have in mind." Knowing aliens hadn't made him think about the position just being human puts a person. At least not until this place.
"Just because Bass knows doesn't mean he's happy about it. But he accepts that I'm doing what I have to. Maybe, given everything, he even understands it a little." Just like Alex understood where Bass was coming from. Even before there was really a 'them', he'd heard enough about Bass's world to understand why he both would and wouldn't want to go back there. He understood why it might be easier to never have that choice and live in what was inarguably a better world. At least one with less war. But people - or a person, at least - that he cared about had been here and were now...who knows where. After that, it was hard to argue that trying wasn't worth it.
"City hall has already been tried. And failed. You think that the guards showing up within a month or so of some of the restrictions being lifted is a coincidence? It's not. Someone commented that this was like 1984 and I have to say that I kind of agree. With the number of people who appear, at least, to give in to the status quo. The number of people who just accept that things are the way they are without trying to change." He shook his head.
"In a world where Superman can't leave the city, we're the vulnerable people. Sure, Kyle. We're all vulnerable. We're all stuck here, unable to leave, and unable to do anything about it. Us not being werewolves or superheroes has nothing to do with being vulnerable. Us being in the power of someone who can hobble the people who are more powerful is why we're vulnerable."
Kyle can't blame Alex with what they've been through, the things that this place has thrown at them. But this isn't even about that. This is about whoever the hell is behind the government, and all they've personally done to them. Even if he's not sure he thought any agreements would be honored by this place, but that's just because he has no faith in the man behind the curtain.
And he still finds himself settling in, making a life and a home, and he's not sure he's ready to give that up. But he didn't do all he had and taken oaths not to do what he could for people not to see how he can help those in the city from the government.
"A lot of them have been in a lot worse worlds so this isn't so bad for them. Or they have their reasons to try and make this world home no matter what they do." He thinks about Philip, about those that know they're dead back home that he's talked to. "Some have their reasons," he says softly.
"Wasn't what I mean, but you're right. So what are you proposing? And even with your skills, what makes you think using their device that even if they can't find you, that they won't track down the others who are responding? What can be done for them?"
