You know I've had to be a morning person most of my life, right? Military. Even when we were crawling into our beds at 3am, we still had to be up at the crack of dawn.

Then you have to agree there's a big difference between being functional and alert at oh-dark-thirty and being faced with cheerful and alert.

Clearly you didn't have the commanding officers that expected you to be cheerful. Or at least to have no sign that you were anything less than pleased to be out of bed that early.
